LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – With kids out of school for the summer, two Lima-area organizations are working to ensure no child goes hungry during the break.

As students with Mentoring with Music continued learning about musical techniques and career paths, Spread the Love Ministry from Faith Christian Church stopped by to deliver free peanut butter and jelly meals. The kids walked outside to the PB&J van to grab their sack lunches and returned inside to eat together. By providing free meals, organizers hope to help reduce food insecurity — a need that often increases when children are out of the classroom for summer break.

Lima organizations tackle summer hunger with music and meals

“It's important for us to get out in the community, during the summertime, provide the meals that we've been providing, so at least they get something nutritious in their stomachs. These kids need to be able to learn and focus, even during the summertime months, so that they're prepared to become responsible adults as they go through their lives,” says Laurie Camper, Program Director, Spread the Love.

Camper noted that Spread the Love is growing. Starting this upcoming school year, the group plans to increase its deliveries from once to twice a week, aiming to distribute at least 100 meals each week.
