LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Jazz may be known for its free-form nature, but local children learned there is much more to this uniquely American genre during the Lima Symphony’s “Mornings with the Maestro” series.
Music Director Andrew Crust was joined by a jazz combo to explore concepts such as tempo, chords, and timing. The students actively participated by directing the musicians on how fast a song should move or how loud or soft to play. The program is designed to teach children the basics of music while encouraging a lifelong appreciation for a variety of musical styles.
“Not every kid has parents who expose them to various kinds of music, and so we make these programs interactive. We get them involved learning the structure of the music, how to really feel at ease and have the vocabulary for it. And even though they understand this music, like we all do, give them some more words and some more experience so that they can be lifelong fans," said Andrew Crust, music director of the Lima Symphony Orchestra.
The next session of “Mornings with the Maestro” will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 31 at the Lima Public Library.
