LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - St. Gerard students wrapping up a week of Lenten service projects by helping out at Our Daily Bread in Lima.

5th - 8th graders were busy cleaning dishes, clearing tables, and sorting food to get ready for meal time at the soup kitchen. School leaders say it was an exciting opportunity for students to pitch in with some hands-on service, with a theme of Fostering a Spirit of Compassion.

They tell us the week of public service has had a big impact on the kids, who were happy to make a difference.

School leaders say it was an exciting opportunity for students to pitch in with some hands-on service, with a theme of Fostering a Spirit of Compassion.

"They're taught that this is our mission and our calling, and it's an opportunity for them to get out and see some things they've never seen before and actually put their mission into practice," said Natalie Schoonover, principal at St. Gerard School.

"It helps me learn how important it is to help others and how everyone is different," said Cavaeyah Haithcox, a 7th grader at St. Gerard.

Students also made stops at the West Ohio Food Bank and Lima Convalescent Home this week for their Lenten season projects.
