A book donation will help promote literacy at Heritage Elementary School.
Altrusa of Lima donated a $500 check and a handful of books to the elementary school. The funds, as well as the books, will go towards the school's book vending machine, which helps dispense different types of genres to students. The goal of the program is to help promote positive reading.
"And our main thrust is literacy, so anything that has to do with literacy, we take the opportunity to try and take advantage of it so it was really important when we found out about this because where do you start with literacy? You start with the little ones," explained Sylvia Clark, Altrusa of Lima president.
"We thought it was a good idea that they get books at the library, they check them out, they return them, these books are theirs to take home," said Scott Spriggs, Heritage Elementary School assistant principal. "They get to keep them, parents they take them home, read to them, interact, and that's what helped spark the idea is be able to get them books at home that they can have and call their own."
The book vending machine started at Heritage Elementary School last year.
