BOTKINS, OH (WLIO) - Seven fire crews battled a commercial building fire in Botkins on Sunday evening.

Fire crews from Botkins, Jackson Center, Anna and Van Buren Township in northern Shelby County were called to Boomerang Rubber on Dinsmore Street in Botkins just after 6 p.m. Sunday after a police officer on patrol noticed black smoke coming from one of the buildings at the business. The building produces rubber mud flaps and truck beds, along with mulch. A second alarm was called when Botkins fire crews arrived on the scene, bringing in additional firefighters from Wapakoneta, New Bremen and New Knoxville in neighboring Auglaize County. Heavy black smoke was seen pouring from different areas of the building. No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured. Botkins Fire Chief Tom Glass said the rubber in the building can be known to spontaneously combust, but the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Ohio State Fire Marshal will join the investigation Monday morning.
