ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - An unusual incident for this part of the state, as a black bear was found dead back in November in Allen County.

It appears that this female black bear was hit and killed by a vehicle on Amherst Road near the Hardin County line.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife says that black bears are common in Ohio but are located more in the northeast part of the state and along the Pennsylvania border heading south.

"We do collect reported sightings of black bears all across Ohio, and that's a lot of what we use to gauge our population numbers, and we have never had a confirmed sighting from Allen County or any of the direct surrounding counties, so it's extremely unusual," explained Sarah Schott, Wildlife Communications Specialist.

Schott says the bear that was hit was similar in size to this educational pelt which would be about 100 pounds.
