LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District marked Arbor Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States with a ceremonial tree planting at Ottawa Metro Park.

Officials and community members gathered to plant a buckeye tree near the park’s amphitheater, symbolizing growth, resilience and the enduring strength of the Lima-Allen County community.

The tree, a species closely associated with Ohio, was selected as a lasting tribute that visitors can watch mature over time. Its prominent location ensures it will be a visible feature for those enjoying the park.

“It’s in a spot where everyone’s going to be able to see it,” said Myles Cartwright, deputy director of the park district. “It’s one of the few buckeye trees in this park, and it will be the most prevalent one for people to come and enjoy.”

The planting was a joint effort between the park district and the city of Lima, highlighting collaboration in celebrating both Arbor Day and the nation’s milestone anniversary.
