Common Core Standards are not supported by all, but on Tuesday, they were the topic of discussion. On Tuesday, a John Carroll University mathematics educator addressed the controversial issue with Bluffton University Students. Guest speaker Linda Gojak, connected Common Core with STEM Learning.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "mathematics" as "the science of numbers and their operations." Students sitting in on the forum were informed about Common Core State Standards, and how Common Core approaches math in a different way. Common Core mathematics requires students to analyze a math problem, rather than jump into a solution attempt. While some people find Common Core methods to be overly complex, guest speaker Linda Gojak says the methods may make math easier to understand for others.
Gojak asked students and faculty to solve math problems using the Common Core Method. To explain the process, she used the same building blocks used by children when they are learning in school.
