As talks continue to be at a standstill over funding for a security wall along the United States southern border, one local congressman sees the president taking the matter into his own hands if an agreement can't be reached.
Congressman Jim Jordan was the keynote speaker for the Allen County Republican monthly luncheon. Jordan talked to the local GOP about the battle over the border security wall. He said that Republicans should not have waited until after the mid-term election when they lost the House to try and get the funding for the promise that President Trump made when he was campaigning in 2016. Now a bipartisan committee tries to reach a compromise, but Jordan says it's tough to get an agreement when the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will not consider funding for a border security wall. Recently President Trump says he will issue an executive order to build the wall by declaring it a national emergency, and Jordan sees this as a likely option.
"I think Americans get it, the president certainly gets it and he has a job to do as commander and chief when you've got the drug problem. Two days ago, enough fentanyl was seized on the border to kill 57 million people, that's equivalent to the entire population of the upper Midwest, I mean it's like this how serious the drug problem, the gang problem, the human trafficking problem, the president understands it and I think if he has to he'll do the executive order," said Congressman Jim Jordan.
Jordan says that lawmakers could reach an agreement if the Democrats were in the mindset of 6 or more years ago when former President Obama and Secretary Clinton were talking about increasing border security.
