A controversial dog tag enforcement blitz in Allen County is now complete. During that effort, the Allen County Dog Warden's Office sold nearly 1,100 dog licenses.
This year, animal control officers were instructed to impound dogs without a license. However, dog warden, Julie Shellhammer, did offer tags for purchase on the spot. During a two week period between late April and early May, 1,090 tags were sold.
However, 37Â dogs were also impounded. Shellhammer says all but two have been returned to their owners. The last two remain at the Dog Warden's facility pending the owner getting insurance on the animals. Shellhammer says the enforcement effort, while controversial, raised awareness of the law.
Shellhammer adds that regular compliance checks will continue throughout the year.
