LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima YMCA swim team is heading south to compete for nationals. Four members of this year’s team will be in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Monday to compete for a national championship. Arleigh Amspoker from Elida High School, Lizzy Sidener from Wapakoneta, Angela Fronzaglia from Lima Senior High School, and Jenna Downey from Bluffton High School all qualified for the national competition.
The Lima swimmers will be going up against the best in the nation, some of whom could be competing for Olympic trials and spots on Team USA. The swimmers are excited to be on the big stage, and know what got them to this point is what they need to take with them to the nationals.
“Definitely the coaches I've had over my 10 years of swimming and honestly, personally, my work ethic, just showing up to practice and honestly listening to my coaches, taking what they say into consideration. The other week, when I finished my individual events, I cried, and it was like my first cry of the season. It was really weird, but I'm honestly going off on a high note, so it's really exciting,” says Lizzy Sidener, senior at Wapakoneta High School.
“With high school, it's a much smaller group. With the Y, we have like 160 some-swimmers, and my high school only has 16, so it's much different to be in a small group versus a large group. You get much more one-on-one experience with your high school coaches. but you still get that experience with April, our coach. I've had her since I was 6 years old, so it's a really fun experience for both teams,” says Angela Fronzagli, a freshman at Lima Senior High School.
The Lima Y team won the league championship at Bowling Green last weekend against 18 other Ohio swim teams. The national swim competition will be held from April 2nd to April 6th.
