18-year-old Jamale Fox pleaded guilty in January for discharging a firearm into a habitat, and another count of felonious assault was dropped. The crime happened in October of 2021. According to court records, Fox was with a group of teens who had a previous argument with a man. Fox and three others went to the man's home with guns. The man who had a weapon himself, shut his door on the group. Then Fox shot through the closed door at the man. He says he was trying to protect himself and the people he was with.

“There is a law in Ohio that says I have a right to have a gun in my own home and I have a right to defend my home,” says Judge Terri Kohlrieser. “You don’t know what that guy was like or what he had. You are lucky, you didn’t get shot. You are lucky that your family is here for a sentencing, rather than a funeral.”

Judge Kohlrieser sentenced him to 4 years on the discharging of a firearm into a habitat charge and 3 more years for the gun specification.
