Grand Lake St. Marys State Park is an area destination that’s doing well this Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The campground was packed with campers including Tom Wente from Minster who has been coming here for 40 years.
“It’s just relaxing. We had four daughters and they always really enjoyed it. There were always nice programs for the campers out here. The girls, the naturalists programs and that kind of stuff, the girls really enjoyed it. We used to water ski. We would come out for a week just spend a week of vacation out here,” said Wente.
And they’ve had to make room to accommodate as many campers as possible.
“Actually we took part of our group camp and we broke that into primitive sites, so we have an additional ten primitive sites, otherwise the camp is full,” said Dave Faler, Grand Lake St. Marys Park manager.
The campground even has a few new things this year.
“Yes, some pretty impressive renovations. We have the splash pad and that is open as of noon today. We also got 19 full service full hookups and we had a shelter house and we also, what we’re really excited about is a new shower house and bathroom,” added Faler.
“For a long time it just kind of...it didn’t get any attention from the state but now they are. They are doing some full hookup sites. They’re doing lots of things that is required. The new splash pad, the new shelter house all those are very welcome improvements. There is a lot of people that really enjoy the camping life. ...On a holiday weekend you can hardly get a site out here anymore,” said Wente.
