LIMA, OH (WLIO) - We have emotional baggage that we carry with us, but what's the best way to lift that weight off our shoulders?
The Jegna Corporation sponsored a workshop with the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center dealing with social-emotional learning. The interactive workshop, which included group activities and open discussions, was led by Tierica Berry, an award-winning author and social-emotional learning specialist from Atlanta, Georgia.
Berry has also previously worked with Lima Senior as well as brunches sponsored by Jegna. Her workshop was titled "It takes a Village: Unpacking the Emotional Suitcase," encouraging everyone to support local young people and help them work through emotional trauma.
"So, when I talk about unpacking the emotional suitcase, it's really how to process and cope with your emotional trauma. And emotional trauma is just any experience you might have had that might exceed your ability to cope with that experience that you had. And that could look very different for different people. You and I could have the same experience and have very different support. So, helping educators to build better relationships with students will help them to better assess what the student needs in that particular moment to avoid further traumatizing the student or the resident and really giving them what they need so they can be successful, because ultimately that's what we want. To get them from point a, where they are, to point b, which is that vision of success," said Tierica Berry, the social-emotional learning specialist and keynote speaker for the Jegna-sponsored workshop.
