Heritage Elementary students are learning what it takes to save the world today thanks to Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks.

4th graders at Heritage were visited by park workers and volunteers to take part in an escape room-style activity. The program aims to teach the students about the ecosystems native to our area and Ohio-- with what it takes for the food chain to survive. There were puzzles and clues for the students to follow that corresponded to a specific plant or animal.

Park officials say that besides working in teams and using problem-solving skills, the program really shows the students about the circle of life.

"So it goes from the sun, to the plants, to the herbivores, to the carnivores, and then the decomposers take care of everything, and if one piece is missing, then something doesn't have food, and something doesn't have anyone eating it, so it kind of multiplies and goes crazy. And the students could kind of see that today, of what happens if they missed a part," stated Doreen Martin, a naturalist at Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.

The Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks will continue to bring their nature education program to other schools around the area throughout the school year.
