Judge Megan Shanahan was the keynote speaker for the Allen County Republicans' monthly meeting. Shanahan has been on the bench for 13 years and recently was a strong advocate of a 2022 Constitutional Amendment that Ohio voters passed overwhelmingly that dealt with judges and the bonds they set in criminal cases.

"What really motivated me to run was the case that said judges should not consider public safety when setting bond. I knew right then I needed to step up and do my part to stop an activist court that flies in the face of common sense, public safety, and it's a danger," says Judge Megan Shanahan.

And the state's Supreme Court could be ruling on issues like abortion and redistricting in the future. Shanahan says the court needs to follow the law that was written.

"The Ohio Supreme Court has to follow what the Ohio legislature enacts; that is our job, literally," adds Shanahan. "Interpret and apply the laws; apply the Constitution as written. You know I don't want to speak about something that could come before the Supreme Court, of course. But it is not my job to legislate. That is what you voted your legislators for."

Shanahan will be facing Democratic Justice Michael Donnelly in the November general election.
