LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A story of resilience and determination took center stage as Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Terri Kohlrieser shared her journey from foster care to the courtroom during the Allen County Children Services Annual Luncheon.

Speaking to a room filled with child welfare professionals, Kohlrieser reflected on a difficult childhood shaped by circumstances beyond her control. Raised by a single mother who later made decisions that led to instability, Kohlrieser was placed into foster care, moving from home to home during her formative years.

“And then one day, there was a knock on the door that terrified me, because it was a social worker,” Kohlrieser said. “And that started the next few years for me, until I graduated high school, and it was a very terrifying, confusing time.”

Despite the uncertainty, Kohlrieser said she found a path forward through education, which became her motivation to overcome adversity. That determination ultimately led her to pursue a career in law, where she now works to support children facing similar challenges.

“I just used those things that happened to me as positives,” she said. “They made me stronger, they made me tougher, and they really prepared me to do the job that I do now, because it's not for the weak at heart, and what I went through taught me how strong I am.”

Kohlrieser emphasized that her experiences shaped her perspective on the bench, allowing her to better understand and advocate for children navigating the foster care system.

She also expressed gratitude to those in attendance, acknowledging their daily efforts to support vulnerable children and families.

Kohlrieser told the group that their work is making a lasting difference and encouraged them to continue providing hope and stability to those who need it most.
