LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Crossing train tracks on your way to work? Make sure you know an alternative route.

Law overturned in August concerning stopped trains at crossings still causing frustration for drivers

Back in August of 2022, the Ohio Supreme Court overturned the state law prohibiting trains from blocking intersections for more than five minutes. Due to federal regulations, local government officials are no longer able to control the movement or the standstill of trains passing through our area.

"Drivers need to just be patient and realize that as far as us taking action or trying to cite the train companies, we no longer can do that, so one of the only things we can do is check with the train companies and check with their status to see how long it's going to be before they start moving again," stated Sgt. Matt Douglass, Lima Police Department.

City officials say if you would like to see municipalities have the power to prohibit trains stopping for long periods of time at crossings, contact your congressional representatives to get the law changed.
