Lawsuit settled: Royal Inn set to be demolished

A resolution has been reached in the matter surrounding the former Lima motel, the Royal Inn.

According to Deputy Law Director John Payne, the Royal Inn is set to be demolished. Effective the end of this past October, the city and owner of the Royal Inn entered into an agreement where the owner agreed to demolish the structure by January 1, 2019. Payne said the owner has hired a contractor to take care of the demolition. The city filed a 490-page complaint in May, stating the Royal Inn was a public nuisance. A metal roof blew off the structure a month prior which prompted an inspection of the building.

"Very please with the end result," Payne said. "I think it's a win for the city to have this building down. A lot of city resources have been used for calls of service at that location. It's a big win for the taxpayer."

The owner will remain in possession of the land after the demolition and Payne would expect the owner to sell the land.
