LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Veterans helping veterans is what the Allen County Veterans Service Commission is all about.
The Lima Kiwanis Club honoring their veterans today and learning about the commission. Allen County has a little more the 6,600 veterans and the commission assists about 400 a year. The Veterans Service Commission believes that number will increase with the passage of the PACT Act which is expanding VA health care as they assist in filing claims.
"Sometimes veterans don't like to say that they're hurt or something's wrong. But if they come into our office, which is located at the courthouse, they are talking to other veterans who have been there, who most of them are disabled for a reason or another and they're there to help the veterans. And they understand what veteran problems are," commented Bill King, vice president of the Allen County Veterans Service Commission.
Kings says they also do outreach programs and will hold another veterans picnic in may of 2023 after the success of this year's event. If you are a veteran and are unsure of your benefits or need some assistance, contact the Allen County Veterans Service Commission at 419-223-8522.
