LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Unlimited access to unsecured firearms is a key factor in violent crime involving youth. Luckily, Lima has a program to educate and provide safety for all families.

The "Store It Safe" program, held at Unity Elementary School in Lima, talks about ways to reduce shootings, mainly through limiting access to unsecured firearms. With this program, parents and kids alike learn about gun safety, limited access to weapons, and more knowledge on shootings within Lima.

At this meeting, each parent was provided with a free lockbox for their firearms. This ensures that their kids will not be able to grab any weapon in their household.

"The first thing, we have to educate our babies. Our future, our future little Lima. Our future mayor, our little city council, our future lawyer. We have to get them educated," says Derry Glenn, 6th Ward Lima City Councilman.

He adds that educating the youth is the best way to reduce shootings from unsecured firearms. Interested in learning more? The "store it safe" program meets monthly, with the next meeting at unity elementary school March 17th.
