LIMA, OH (WLIO) - It's hard to believe that donating a few bucks to be comfortable can make such a huge impact. But that's what volunteers and associates at Mercy Health-St. Rita's have done by donating $5 so they could "dress down" on Fridays during the summer.
They have donated $24,000 to date to Lima area projects that make an impact.
Today, the Volunteer Outreach Committee presented a total of $6,000 to three area projects that impact the community. The Derry Glenn Air Conditioners for Seniors Program, the Allen County Correctional Institute's Re-entry Clothing Store, and the Bradfield Community Center's youth programs all received $2,000 for their causes.
This is the 4th year for the Community Cares Fridays.
"Oh, it's a wonderful feeling because here's where we live and work, and raise our families. We want the positives of Lima to be in the spotlight, not just the negatives. So we're really happy we can support these programs and make Lima a better place to live," said Janice Ball, vice president outreach committee of the auxiliary.
"It's a win-win for all these folks that got it. When we delivered to them, they were so happy. So I want to thank St. Rita's and the volunteers and Janice for all the work they've done to make this project be very successful," said Derry Glenn, Air Conditioners for Seniors Program.
"Just so they can feel good leaving the institution. Feel, you know, just where they can blend right in and won't be stereotyped. Normally they leave in a red sweat suit and a brown paper bag. But now they can leave with a bookbag; they can leave in a suit if they want to," said Brenda Guice, Allen County Correctional Institute's Re-entry Clothing Store.
"I'm excited. We really thank the volunteers from Mercy Health; that was a big undertaking on their part, and it shows that people still do care about our community," said Chris Jackson, executive director of the Bradfield Community Center.
This is the 4th year for the Community Cares Fridays that started during COVID in the summer of 2020. They have donated $24,000 to date to Lima area projects that make an impact.
