LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A new piece of technology will help doctors at Lima Memorial Health System in detecting lung cancer.

The ion endoluminal system offers patients a more precise biopsy as well as easier ways for health professionals to obtain samples from deep within the lung, a previously challenging aspect of lung biopsy.

Before receiving the new medical equipment, doctors had to use magnetic tracking to explore a person's lungs but were limited in how they could explore the lung to detect nodules and signs of cancer. But with the new ion system, they will be able to thoroughly inspect a patient's lung.

"Now with the upgrade with the robotic lung colposcopy, we're using shapes sensing technology, which essentially the bronchoscope knows exactly what shape and area it's in to know exactly where it's at. And then when get close to the nodule, we're able to move the end of the bronchoscope in any direction in three dimensions so we can definitively get exactly where we are going," explained Jason Stienecker, pulmonologist at Lima Memorial Health System.

Lima Memorial Health System says that the ion equipment can help maintain samples for a potential lung cancer diagnosis.
