LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Mercy Health-St. Rita's looked to the community for help caring for Lima area mothers and newborns.

Funds raised at this year's annual Red Door Gala, featuring secret guest performer Five for Fighting, will go towards upgrading the Birth Place at St. Rita's. Mercy Health also shared that, thanks to last year's donors, they've created a new behavioral health wing and adopted a therapy dog. The hospital is now looking to add things like a department for emergency pregnancy care and improvements to existing facilities, from the waiting room to the special care unit.

"Maternity units across the state have been closing in the last several years, and we want to make sure that we're reinvesting in ours and being that regional referral center for anybody that needs maternity services. It's the mission of St. Rita's, the sacredness of life, and so focusing on moms and babies and making sure they're safe and that they have those services is a key component of why we're in the community," explained Ronda Lehman, the president of Mercy Health St. Rita's.
The 2024 Mercy Club honorees were the late Rex and Barbara Perry, and the award was accepted by their children.
