SHAWNEE TWP, ALLEN COUNTY (WLIO) - When you see the fire department show up at your house, it’s an emergency. But Thursday night, Shawnee Township Fire Department was making runs to feed hungry residents and also to make sure they stay safe in case of a fire. For Fire Prevention Week, the fire department teamed up with the Lima Domino’s restaurant to deliver pizza to township residents, and while they were at the home, they checked to see if there were working smoke detectors. If not, they would replace the detector or change the batteries. But if everything was in working order, the pizza was free.

“The fire department actually reached out to us and asked if we were interested in doing it, and my acting GM at the time, Alyx, called me and said, ‘Can we do this? This sounds awesome.’ And I said, ‘That does sound awesome.’ And we are always looking to get out into the community, and we would love to do it in other towns that we have.,” says Samantha Karsten, District Manager for Domino’s.
“A lot of people have kids, dogs, and you don’t want to be asleep at 3 o'clock and not know that there is a fire if you don’t have a working fire alarm and not have time to get your kids and animals out of the house,” says Alyx Hartness, who helped coordinate with Shawnee Twp Fire Department.

Smoke detectors should be placed in just about every room except for bathrooms and away from cooking appliances, and firefighters have a tip for people before they go to bed.
“We actually preach, ‘Close before you dose.' We tell people to sleep with their bedroom doors shut. It’s going to stop the spread of smoke and fire at night. Now if you don’t have working smoke alarms, that smoke is going to stay out a lot longer, which is going to let the fire grow a lot bigger. Having working smoke alarms, specifically having multiple working smoke alarms, that is going to give you early notification if there is a fire. Which is going to give you a lot more time to get out in an emergency,” says Matt Reaman, Shawnee Twp. Fire Prevention Officer.
Fire officials say smoke detectors need to be checked once a month; if yours uses disposable batteries, they need to be changed twice a year; and totally replace your smoke detectors every ten years.
