A new lightning protection system is being installed on the Auglaize County Courthouse.Â
The system includes copper lightning rods attached to parts of the roof and cables running to the ground to transfer the lightning away from the building.  Those copper rods are expected to continue to work for as long as the building is standing.  The county has planned to have this system installed for the last two years and it will cost over $49,000 to set up.Â
The main purpose of installing the system is for the county to save money in the long run.
"We've had several lightning strikes over the past couple of years since we've remodeled the building. Â It's taken out a lot of our technical equipment and it's cost us several thousand dollars so we're going to get lightning protection to stop that," said Rick Bice, Maintenance Supervisor for Auglaize County.
The project will take a month to complete.
