Space heater safety tips

With the weather getting colder, you may be ready to start setting up your space heater - but keep in mind that space heaters can be dangerous if used improperly.

According to the Harvard University Environmental Health and Safety group, space heaters cause 25,000 fires a year, sending 6,000 people to the emergency room, and that's why the Lima Fire Department says that it's important that space heaters are set up the right way to keep you and your family safe.

"The main thing we want to look for is keeping three feet of clearance around the space heater; obviously we don’t want combustibles, anything that could catch fire, like clothing, drapes, or anything like that, make sure it’s in the center of the room not near anything like that," said Firefighter Chris Hefner with the Lima Fire Department.

Those setting up space heaters should watch that the cord is not frayed before plugging it in.
