EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WLIO) - The Village of East Palestine and Norfolk Southern have announced a $22 million settlement stemming from the 2023 train derailment.
The settlement is designated for priorities identified by the village in connection with the derailment. It also acknowledges approximately $13.5 million Norfolk Southern has already paid to the village.

The freight train derailment involved 11 cars transporting hazardous materials. Area residents were evacuated, and days later, officials feared a potential uncontrolled explosion. Toxic vinyl chloride was intentionally released and burned from five rail cars to prevent such an event.
The announcement also reaffirms Norfolk Southern's $25 million commitment to ongoing improvements to East Palestine City Park.
