The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce presented the school with their Exceeding the Standards banner for their outstanding academic achievement for the last school year. The academy offers a flexible learning option for students in 9th through 12th grade, and it has a dropout prevention and recovery program to help students up to 22 years old get caught up in their education and graduate.

"Many of our students come to us two and three years behind academically. So for our students to be exceeding the standards on the state report card is quite an accomplishment," says Mindy Schulz, superintendent of West Central Learning Academy.

Another sign of their success is the number of students who walk away with their diplomas.

"It's always an accomplishment when you can see a student graduate from high school. We offer early graduation here. So just this school year alone, we have already had 15 students meet the criteria of the state of Ohio to graduate early. And so the day that a student meets that graduation criteria, we schedule a private ceremony for them to come in with their family and their friends, and then I give them their diploma that day," adds Schulz.

The school has around 75 to 80 students per year, and on Friday night, 24 of them will be graduating from the West Central Learning Academy.
