Work is underway inside the historic theater after the Friends of the St. Marys Theater has spent around $150.000 to replace the roof on the building.
Now crews are busy working on the auditorium ceiling to repair water damage from the leaking roof. Thanks to some donated work by a local business, there is heat in the building and the space above the stage is back in working order.
“We have taken care of the fly space already,” says Doug Spencer of Friends of the St. Marys Theater. “We have an operable screen, we have an operable main curtain, and the rest of the accessories hanging the fly space have been removed, because they were dangerous, the old hemp rope needed to be replaced. So we are safe above the stage right now, so that is huge.”
Spencer says they have raised over one-third of their $3,000,000 goal. They will continue to go after grants to add to the community support to complete the project.
