Versailles survived a marathon night on its home floor, outlasting North Union 71-62 in double overtime during the Lady Tiger Classic, an event that saw five of six scheduled games able to be completed.
The host Lady Tigers set the tone early against the No. 18-ranked Wildcats in Division V. After the opening tip, Versailles controlled the first quarter, with Katey Litten cleaning up a missed shot for a putback to get the offense going.
Litten continued to make her presence felt in the first half, gathering and scoring again as part of a 12-point opening half that helped Versailles establish momentum.
Rowan Schmitmeyer added to that early control, as the sophomore stayed with the play and knocked down a short jumper to keep the Tigers in front. Versailles also found success attacking the paint, with Jena Heitkamp converting inside to push the home team’s advantage.
Before the break, Schmitmeyer connected with Kynnedi Hager for another basket, sending Versailles into halftime with a 31-23 lead.
North Union responded after the break, forcing extra time, and then extended the game into a second overtime. In the end, Versailles had enough to pull away, holding on for a 71-62 double-overtime win to cap a long night at the Lady Tiger Classic.
