Realtors, insurance agents, other professionals tour Ohio's 1st 3D printed home in Auglaize County

AUGLAIZE COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Professionals from every side of the housing industry learned firsthand what 3D printing is capable of.

Local professionals in fields like real estate, construction, and insurance came to an open house to take a look at the state's first ever 3D-printed home in Auglaize County.

The company that built the home, Sustainable Concrete Innovations, says building this way comes with plenty of benefits. They say using concrete instead of drywall and siding means the structure is more protected against wind or storm damage and can lower energy costs by keeping the inside more insulated than a typical house.

They say using concrete instead of drywall and siding means the structure is more protected against wind or storm damage and can lower energy costs by keeping the inside more insulated than a typical house.

They also believe this could be a good solution to the current housing shortage.

"If we're 270,000 housing units short in Ohio, the way to do that is to build more homes. You can't do that with the labor shortage that we have. The neat thing about 3D-printed homes is that we can come in with less labor and, in a quicker time frame, build a home," said John Smoll, the COO of Sustainable Concrete Innovations.

Many realtors walking through the home were impressed with the results and could see 3D-printing homes becoming popular someday.

"You can actually have it 3D-printed, and you can design it ahead of time, sit down with somebody and have it printed, and have it built. They stated you can have a 1200-square-foot home built within six weeks. That's what their goal is in the future," commented Shannon Rempe of Cowan Realtors.

"I think the buyers are going to love this type of house, and I can see this just growing in our area because we have such a shortage of homes in our area," added Melinda Sebenoler, also of Cowan Realtors.
