Local runners got a unique running experience Saturday to help fund a unique local project. Around 250 runners took part in the first-ever Half Pint 5K. The race was held at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, and the runners were able to run around the exterior of the tank plant, including the test track that the Abrams tanks use at the facility. The money raised during the 5K goes to help further the mission of Operation Half Pint.
“It’s a half-scaled version of the Abrams tank, that we bring around to local parades, car shows, air shows,” says Melissa Amstutz, Organizer, Half Pint 5k. “So, it is all volunteer-based, and we are raising money because we need another trailer, and we are building a half-scale Stryker. We wanted to do a fundraiser, and as the wellness coordinator at the tank plant I thought it would be a good idea to do a 5k.”
Amstutz says they would like to make the run an annual event.
