ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Village of Elida teaming up with the Allen County Marine Corp League for Flag Day.

A flag exchange was held at the Elida Town Hall building for residents to come and drop off any worn and torn flags they have to be properly disposed of. Residents could also purchase a new flag to replace their old one and purchase a decorative military seal or other decorations like Ohio State's Brutus Buckeye.

June 14th marks Flag Day, which is the anniversary of when the Continental Congress approved the design for a flag for the United States of America back in 1777. Now, almost 250 years later, we observe Flag Day to honor veterans who have served and what it means to fly the American flag and what it stands for.

Allen County Marine Corp League honors Flag Day with annual flag exchange

A flag exchange was held at the Elida Town Hall building for residents to come and drop off any worn and torn flags they have to be properly disposed of.

"It's just something we do every year on Flag Day," said Bryan Montgomery, Sgt. of Arms for Marine Corps League Detachment 1063 Lima. "It's just so you can get rid of our flag properly. People don't want to do that, but we'll take care of it for you. Even if you don't buy a flag, you can drop it off and we'll get rid of your flags."

The proper way to dispose of a damaged American flag is to burn it or cremate it. Do not simply throw it in the trash.
