LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Fire Department says a charging e-bike may have sparked a fire that destroyed a home early Friday morning.
Fire crews were called to 801 West Wayne Street around 6:39 a.m. for reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from the attic. Everyone living in the home was able to get out before firefighters arrived. Crews remained on scene for roughly four hours, and the house is considered a total loss.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire appears to have been a charging e-bike, whose lithium battery caught fire. The Red Cross was called to assist the families displaced by the fire.
Public Safety Message – E-Bike Fire Hazard from the Lima Fire Department
This morning, our crews responded to a house fire that appears to have started from a charging e-bike. Thankfully, everyone made it out safely, but the damage was significant. These incidents are happening more often, and they move fast.
A few reminders to keep your home and family safe:
• Charge e-bikes, scooters, and similar devices away from living spaces when possible.
• Never leave them charging while you’re asleep or away from home.
• Use the manufacturer’s charger only. Aftermarket chargers can overheat batteries.
• Keep batteries and chargers away from combustible materials.
• If the battery looks swollen, damaged, or starts to smell sweet or “chemical,” stop using it immediately and have it checked or replaced.
Lithium battery fires grow quickly and produce toxic smoke. A few simple precautions make a big difference.
If you ever smell something unusual coming from a charging device, or you notice smoke or sparks, call 911 right away.
Stay safe, and help us spread the word.
