COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio Senate Republicans have introduced a bill that could change the state's law regarding adult marijuana use.

The proposed legislation, introduced by Sen. Steve Huffman, R-Tipp City, seeks to increase the sales tax on marijuana products sold at licensed dispensaries from 10% to 15%. The bill would also direct tax revenue to the state’s general fund, rather than the multiple allocations approved by voters in 2023, which include funding for municipalities with dispensaries and addiction programs.

The bill also proposes reducing the maximum number of marijuana plants allowed per household from 12 to 6. Additionally, it would cap the total number of dispensaries for both adult-use and medical marijuana at 350 statewide.

Adult-use marijuana sales began in August 2024, and state data shows more than $242 million in sales during the last five months of the year.

The bill will now move to an Ohio Senate committee for further discussion.
