LIMA, OH (WLIO) - An EPA requirement has the City of Lima offering a free service to some city water customers.
The city is working to remove any remaining lead water lines leading to older homes. The city is responsible for the public line from the main to the shut-off valve and the property owner is responsible for the service line from the shutoff valve to the house. Around 800 water customers will soon get letters from the city offering to pick up the cost for the replacement of their line with copper pipes as a public service to reduce health concerns.
"The water is safe that the City of Lima is producing and is distributing to our customers. It is considered lead-free. We are within all US EPA regulations. However, some of the city's homes do possibly have lead service lines. That is why we are now offering this program to try to help get rid of those lines so everyone in our community is safe," explained Sara Weekley, deputy director of the Lima Utilities Department.
Weekley says some letters will be mailed this week with more next week. Residents just need to complete the consent form to participate.
