When the engine roars are mixed with cheering crowds and the sounds of crumpled metal, it must be Demolition Derby time at the Allen County Fair.
The demolition derby is more of a staple than an annual tradition at local fairs. And to capitalize on this popularity, Allen County joined forces with a couple of counties due south to create something new for drivers to take part in. Now along with some bragging rights, some drivers can walk away with cash if they were successful at the derbies in Shelby, Auglaize, and Allen counties.
“We came up with the I-75 Challenge. That's a points fund, between the three fairs of Shelby County, Auglaize County, and Allen County. And there will be a $2,000 prize split up between the top 3 or 4 drivers,” said Dennis Fricke, Allen County Fair Board.
Before the metal-crunching action, the young kids got to take a turn in a power wheel demo derby, and the winners were able to walk away with a trophy if they were able to outlast the rest of the competitors.
