Learning how your state government works is a required part of the curriculum in Ohio's fourth grade classrooms, but how can you get a 4th grader interested in government without boring them?
One Elida classroom made it real, by turning the classroom into the State House, as a local politician broke it all down for them. Representative Matt Huffman explained the process of state government by getting the students to become their own government. Students role played being members of all three branches of government, that is the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Then they put it to the test by making a law.
Next year, in 5th grade, the students will learn about the federal government as part of the required curriculum.
