Ghanaian tradition comes to Lima

Lima Senior students met with a special guest who is teaching them traditional music and dance from Africa.

Benjamin Ayettey is a Fulbright Scholar in residence at O.N.U. and showed students traditional dance techniques and percussion instruments. Students from the Lima Senior Masterworks Ensemble performed a Kenyan song while accompanied by Ghanaian drums. Ayettey is the artistic director of the Ghana Dance Ensemble and a fellow at the institute of African studies at the University of Ghana.

He started his dancing career in Africa and studied choreography and performance at Arizona State University. While teaching at the University of Ghana, he met a current O.N.U. professor who helped him apply for the Fulbright Scholarship, which brought him to Ohio. He loves teaching and says it is extremely important for students to familiarize themselves with other cultures.

Ayettey hopes to visit as many schools in the area as possible to teach students about traditional Ghanaian dance and music.
