"I Pink I Can" raises awareness to breast cancer

Lima, OH (WLIO) - There was a sea of pink around Mercy Health-St. Rita's Saturday morning as people took to the sidewalks to help in the fight against breast cancer. The “I Pink I Can” 5K not only raised awareness to the disease but also celebrate the survivors of breast cancer. Around 250 runners and walkers took part in the first annual event. There were even prizes for people wearing the best pink attire. Each year there are nearly 287,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer. 5K organizer Aimee Kuhlman came up with the idea for the run after she was diagnosed herself.

“I was actually diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago in April and I pretty much made it my mission to do what I can to help raise awareness,” says Aimee Kuhlman, Organizer of “I Pink I Can” 5K. “So, I started a support group in May called WOW and I wanted to do something fun and so we are getting some physical activity today (Saturday 10/15).”

Kuhlman says hopes that people take away the importance of getting mammograms from the event. The latest statistics say one and eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
