Ackerman has been with the Lima City Schools for more than thirty years, starting as a special education teacher, principal, and now superintendent. She credits her success to the influence of her mother and how she made her become independent and self-sufficient. Those characteristics have helped her succeed in her career, where she has now become that person of influence for students.

"When I have grown adults who come back to me who were students that I had when I was a principal or even when I was superintendent reminding me that I believed in them no matter what they went through that I was always encouraging them. That maybe I was that one adult they trusted. That means everything. I mean, that is why I do what I do. Because it's so much more about than just reading and math; it's about molding that person to go on to grow up to be a great citizen and do great things," said Jill Ackerman, superintendent of Lima City Schools.

Jill Ackerman says it's important to instill in young girls that they do have the capabilities, that they are smart, and that they can be successful.
