LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Area residents getting educated on the issue of lead in Allen County homes and what they can do to help.
Those with a lead abatement license will be certified to properly inspect and remove lead from homes in materials like paint on walls and in window frames.
The NAACP held a training session on Friday, showing people what steps to take in order to get their lead abatement license. The class was led by Keith Lockhart, a liaison and contractor for the Ohio Department of Development. Those with a lead abatement license will be certified to properly inspect and remove lead from homes in materials like paint on walls and in window frames. Lead has been shown to cause a long list of health problems. Organizers say with such a serious potential danger, it's important to educate, train, and certify local residents so they can fix these problems before it's too late.

"It's very important. This is an impact project that we've been working on. This has everything to do with mental health, education. It goes through the Ohio Health Department. We have other programs that are going on to help us out. It's very big, and it's something that everyone would be into if they had an understanding of it. Like, a lot of people don't understand what's going on until they get to the class, so we just tried to go ahead and get awareness about what's going on. We wanna make sure the liaison is on board and make sure we're very appreciative of what he does. He shows up in different counties, he talks to us, he answers the phone all the time for us, and we're just trying to get it going on in Lima," said AJ Watkins & Keith Lockhart, community outreach for the NAACP and Renovation, Repair, or Painting (RRP) contractor.
Those at the training session took a test to get their certification for lead abatement.
