For the second consecutive year, Lima City Schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman announced the last week in March will be public school week.
Ackerman began a morning press conference stating public schools continued to be attacked yet produce well-rounded students. So the following week will be a celebration of 'Spartan Pride' she said. The week will be filled with activities at each school such as family nights and book fairs. The highlight of the week will be the district-wide open house on March 27th at Lima Senior High School. There will be a free dinner, raffles, games, and tours of the building.
"Last year there were hundreds of people that come through the door and out of the hundreds of people, many of these people came up and said 'I had no idea that you had this stuff in this school building, you offer these opportunities in Lima City Schools,'" said Ackerman. "So to see these lights come on and those eyes get wise and bright it just makes us really happy. It kind of affirms the work that we do."
Ackerman listed several accomplishments for the school district this year including state recognition for the south middle school and the biomedical program introduced at senior high school.
"Our son is in high school and just the number of different opportunities that he's got in education, athletics, extracurricular activities makes it great for us as parents," said Randall Factor, a parent of a Lima School District student. "It gives us flexibility in the things that he wants to participate in."
Mayor Dave Berger was in attendance to give a proclamation that March 26th to 29th will be known as public school week in Lima.
