Their 9th annual scholarship banquet selected four incoming college freshmen to receive funding.
LIMA, OH (WLIO) -Â The NAACP continues their tradition of investing in Lima's young people.Â
Several youth organizations were invited to the banquet to set a good example and inspire them to go to college too.
Their 9th annual scholarship banquet selected four incoming college freshmen to receive funding. Winners were chosen based on their GPA and an essay about their goals for school and their careers. Scholarship recipient Malachi Talbert, who graduated from Lima Central Catholic, will be studying biology at Ohio State Lima starting this fall, and after graduation, he will continue his education working towards a career in the medical field.Â
"I knew I wanted to help people. Optometry is just a great path to go into if you do want to help people. I've met with multiple optometrists; I've studied under them; I've shadowed under them. I'm definitely taking this very seriously, and I'm definitely trying to prepare myself to the best of my abilities," Talbert said.Â
Several youth organizations were invited to the banquet to set a good example and inspire them to go to college too.Â
Awardees and others at the banquet also had the opportunity to tour Mercy Health-St. Rita's Graduate Medical Education Building.
"We have kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters, then we have kids from the Boys and Girls Club, so we're starting with kids at a young age. We're also rolling out a youth chapter for the NAACP so we can help be a part of these kids' lives," explained NAACP president Ron Fails.Â
Awardees and others at the banquet also had the opportunity to tour Mercy Health-St. Rita's Graduate Medical Education Building to learn about their medical student programs.Â
