Major Angel Cortes was sworn in by Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith as the city’s new top cop. It was standing room only as Cortes took the oath of office. He started with the Lima Police Department in 1991 as a patrol officer and as he saw he could make a difference he worked his way up the ranks which led to this day. He says the bottom line is that we must have a safe community where people feel comfortable coming into, living here, and spending time here.

Incoming Lima Police Chief Angel Cortes, “There’s things that we do well now, we’re going to keep doing those things. And there’s going to be some things that we’re going to have to change. And then there’s going to be some new ideas and initiatives that I will develop with my administrative team with input from all ranks in the patrol division and the detective division. And together we’ll come up with a plan to make this community safer.”

It was an emotional moment as Cortes’s son pinned his chief badge on his uniform. He officially takes over at 12 am on June 4th.
