Lower that winter electric or gas bill with these cost efficient heating tips

Stumped on how to keep that electric or gas bill down this winter? We spoke to a local professional on how to cost-efficiently heat your home.

Bob Hare of Quality Mechanical Services said he's seen many people have spikes in their electric or gas bills due to heating their homes. Hare advises to turn your heat down in times when you're not home and if you don't mind sleeping with the temperature a bit cooler. He said you do want to always keep it on rather than turning it on and off, just change the temperature a few degrees. He also said to make sure the registers in the home are open and not covered up.

"If you can turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees, especially if you're not going to be home and if you don't mind sleeping in a bit cooler, turn that thermostat back is a good thing," Hare said, president of Quality Mechanical Services. "Make sure your filter's clean. Always want to make sure that's new or has been changed."

Hare estimates, depending on the size of the home, dialing back the temperature on the thermostat could save you 10 to 20 percent on your bill.
