Man accused of killing Spencerville toddler appears in court

The man accused of killing a 17 month old in Spencerville is given a $5 million bond during his initial appearance in court.

20 year old Christopher Clayton stood before Judge Tammie Hursh in Lima Municipal Court.  He faces one count of murder.

Clayton said very little during the hearing.  However, prosecutors asked for and received the large bond because of the seriousness of the charge and the age of the victim.  Clayton is currently on suicide watch at the Allen County Jail.

According to the Allen County Sheriff's Office, the Spencerville Police Department was called to 229 Wurster Drive in Spencerville where the child, Xavier Wurth, was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom.  Clayton lived with his girlfriend who is the boy's mother at the address.

An autopsy determined the boy died from blunt force trauma.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 28th at 9:30 in the morning.
