SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) - A collision between a motorcycle and an SUV claimed the life of a motorcyclist late Friday night. The accident happened just before 11:30, about three miles south of Sidney at the intersection of County Road 25-A and Kirkwood Road in Orange Township.Â
According to Sergeant David Egbert of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a Jeep Renegade was traveling east on Kirkwood Road when he ran a stop sign at the intersection, colliding with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was traveling north on CR 25-A.
Â
The impact caused extensive damage, with the motorcycle coming to rest in a cornfield about 30 yards north of the intersection. The biker, whose name has not been released — but was described by authorities as 'a younger male,' was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the Jeep, whose name has also not been released, was not injured.Â
Â
Egbert said that the Jeep's driver indicated that a dip in the road before the intersection hindered him from noticing the motorcycle until it was too late. Toxicology testing will be performed to determine if any impairment contributed to the crash.Â
Â
The roadway was closed for about 90 minutes while the accident was cleared. Fire and EMS crews from Sidney and Lockington assisted deputies at the scene. The Shelby County Coroner and representatives from the Montgomery County Coroner's Office also responded. The crash remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
Â
This was the second fatal motorcycle crash in Shelby County on Friday. About eight hours earlier, a 38-year-old Kentucky man died after crashing his motorcycle into the back of a pickup in slowing traffic on Interstate 75 near Fair Road in Sidney.
