There were sirens blasting all over Leipsic this weekend, but not because of an emergency, but to have some fun.
The Northwestern Ohio Volunteer Firemen’s Association is holding their 145th annual convention in the village this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Around 270 different volunteer fire departments in this part of the state were invited to take part in the convention. The Leipsic Volunteer Fire Department kind of stepped up at the last minute to host this year convention because the association didn’t have a location. In the last six months, the firefighters and the village have been busy getting ready to welcome around one thousand people.
“Every business in town has been packed all weekend long. It takes a lot of work to get here,” said Neil Goodwin the Chief of the Leipsic Volunteer Fire Department. “We are very proud of what we have accomplished to get to this point, as any fire department that host the convention is. It’s our kind of weekend to showcase Leipsic”
The weekend event not only promotes the brotherhood among firefighters but a good time between departments.
“We get to talk to fellow firefighters about firefighting tactics. We have a competition to see who the best firefighter for spraying water, we have a competition to see who has the best queen for their departments,” adds Charlie Horn, Pres. Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fireman’s Association. “We have a competition to see whose fire truck is loudest with a siren. It promotes a great ability to fellowship.”
And if you are a fan of fire engines, Saturday at 1:30 at least 100 different units will be taking part in a parade through downtown Leipsic
